Predictive Variables on Intention to Stay as a Nonsmoker Based on Educational Environment Related Factors

Abstract

|
Purpose: This study was to find out the predictive variables of adolescent smoking and their intention to stay as a nonsmoker.
Method: A total of 1,346 adolescents attending 25 middle and high schools in one district of S city participated in the study.
Result: 32.1% of male and 14% of female students reported that they are smokers. The smoking rate was highest among technical high school students and students in middle school were the lowest. As the result of the decision tree analysis by each variables, smoking friend, school classification, and cigarette errand, witnessed teachers smoke were the most significant variables to predict adolescent smoking. For the intention to stay as a non smoker, school classification, smoking friend, school grade, and school satisfaction were the most Significant variables. The students in middle school, high school without smoking friends, who has moderate and high grades, who were satisfied to school had high intention scores.
Conclusions: smoking friend, school classification, cigarette errand, witnessed teachers smoke, smoking friend, school grade, and school satisfaction were the significant and predictive variables for adolescent smoking and their intention to stay as a non smoker.
